What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic 15-amino-acid sequence derived from a protein discovered in human gastric juice. Much of the primary research comes from Croatian laboratories, where it was studied extensively from the 1990s onward as PL 14736.

It is not approved for human use by any regulator, and it has no completed human clinical trials published in peer-reviewed literature.

How it works (in animal models)

Across rodent studies, BPC-157 appears to act on several pathways at once:

  • Angiogenesis — growth of new small blood vessels around injured tissue, likely via VEGF and related signaling.
  • Fibroblast activity — migration and proliferation of the cells that rebuild connective tissue.
  • Nitric oxide system — modulation of NO signaling, which may explain effects on both healing and gut protection.
  • Gut-brain axis — protective effects on the digestive tract are among its most repeated animal findings.

What the research shows — and what it doesn't

The animal literature is broad and striking: faster wound closure, improved tendon healing, and gut protection appear repeatedly across multiple labs and models.

The human evidence is essentially absent. There are no published randomized controlled trials in humans, no established safety profile at any dose, and no pharmacokinetic data in people. Unusual pharmacology — oral activity in rodents, which is atypical for peptides — also remains unexplained in humans.

  • Nearly all data is rodent or cell research at experimental doses.
  • No human safety, dosing, or pharmacokinetic data exists.
  • Much of the literature comes from a related cluster of research groups; independent replication is thinner than it appears.
